How long do you have to file an accident report in Texas?

If you are involved in a car accident in Texas, you or the other driver must report the crash to the local police department within 10 days of the incident. The police officer who responds to the scene will fill out a Texas Peace Officer’s Crash Report (CR-3) and submit it to the Texas Department of Transportation (TxDOT).

The CR-3 report is usually available online within 7 to 10 business days after the crash. However, some police departments may take longer to process and upload the report to the TxDOT website. For example, the Pleasanton Police Department in Texas advises that it may take up to 14 business days for the report to be available online.

You can check the status of your report by visiting the TxDOT Crash Report Online Purchase System and entering the required information, such as the date of the crash, the county, and the name of the police department. Alternatively, you can contact the Pleasanton Police Department directly at (830) 569-3869 and ask for the Records Division.
