What is included in a Texas accident report?

A Texas accident report, also known as a Texas Peace Officer’s Crash Report (CR-3), is a document that records the details of a motor vehicle crash that occurred on a public roadway or the state highway system. A Texas accident report includes information such as the date, time, and location of the crash, the names and addresses of the drivers and passengers involved, the vehicle identification numbers (VINs) and license plate numbers of the vehicles involved, the insurance information of the drivers, the weather and road conditions at the time of the crash, the description and diagram of the crash, the injuries and damages sustained, the contributing factors and causes of the crash, and the opinions and findings of the investigating officer.

How long does a car accident stay on your insurance record in Texas?

A car accident can stay on your insurance record in Texas for three to five years, depending on the severity of the accident and the insurance company’s policies. Insurance companies use your driving record, which is maintained by the Texas Department of Public Safety, to determine your risk level and your insurance rates. If you have been in an accident that resulted in injury, death, or property damage of more than $1,000, or if you were found to be at fault for the accident, it will be reported to the department and stay on your driving record for three years. However, some insurance companies may look back further than three years and consider more serious accidents for longer periods of time. Therefore, your insurance rates may be affected by an accident for longer than it stays on your driving record.

What If My Report Contains Inaccurate Information?

If your report contains inaccurate information, you may request a correction or amendment from the law enforcement agency that filed the report. You will need to provide proof of the error, such as a witness statement, a photo, or a receipt, and submit a written request to the agency. The agency will review your request and determine whether to make the correction or amendment. If the agency agrees to make the change, it will notify the Texas Department of Transportation, which will update the crash record accordingly. If the agency denies your request, you may appeal the decision to the department within 30 days of receiving the denial notice.

How long do you have to file an accident report in Texas?

If you are involved in a car accident in Texas that results in injury, death, or property damage of more than $1,000, you are required by law to file an accident report with the Texas Department of Transportation within 10 days of the crash. You can file the report online using the Crash Report Online Purchase System, or you can mail or deliver a paper copy of the report to the department. The report must be completed by you, your insurance agent, the owner of the vehicle, or your legal representative. The report must include all the information required by the department, such as the names and addresses of the drivers and passengers involved, the vehicle identification numbers (VINs) and license plate numbers of the vehicles involved, the insurance information of the drivers, the description and diagram of the crash, and the injuries and damages sustained. If you are involved in a car accident in Laredo, Texas, you may also need to file a report with the Laredo Police Department, depending on the circumstances of the crash. The Laredo Police Department is the local municipal law enforcement agency that serves an estimated 261,000 people covering an area of 111 square miles. The department employs over 500 sworn officers and over 80 civilian employees, and operates under the direction of Chief of Police Miguel A. Rodriguez Jr. The department has five command divisions, each led by a command captain, and offers specialty support and investigation services. The department also takes a community-oriented policing approach to build community support and trust while maintaining a low crime rate and a high quality of life standard. According to the department’s website, you must file a report with the Laredo Police Department if the accident occurred within the city limits of Laredo, and if any of the following conditions apply:

- The accident resulted in injury or death of any person.
- The accident resulted in damage to the property of any one person to the apparent extent of $1,000 or more.
- The accident involved a hit-and-run driver.
- The accident involved a driver who was under the influence of alcohol or drugs.
- The accident involved a driver who did not have a valid driver’s license or insurance.

You can file a report with the Laredo Police Department by calling 911 or the non-emergency number (956) 795-2800, and requesting an officer to come to the scene of the crash. The officer will investigate the crash and complete a report that will be submitted to the department and the Texas Department of Transportation. Alternatively, you can file a report online using the department’s website, if the accident did not result in injury or death, and if the damage to the property of any one person was less than $1,000. You will need to provide your personal and vehicle information, as well as the information of the other parties involved in the crash. You will also need to describe the crash and upload any photos or documents that support your claim. The online report will be reviewed by the department and forwarded to the Texas Department of Transportation.
