History of Accidents in Lewisville

The city of Lewisville, with a population of around 106,000, is part of the Dallas-Fort Worth metroplex. It sits to the northwest on the shores of Lewisville Lake, and the I-35E Express cuts right through the city. As a result, Lewisville's traffic volume tends towards the high end, and so does its accident volume.

In the last five years, annual accident figures have been between roughly 2500 and 3500 recorded incidents a year. 2014 had the fewest of these incidents with just 2,578, but accident figures rose quickly to 3,484 the next year -- a high point for Lewisville. Accident counts in 2016 and 2017 declined year-on-year, though, first dropping to 3,339 and then 3,136. However, this downward trend ended in 2018 when accident volume increased to 3,235.

The large jump in yearly accidents between 2014 and 2015 in Lewisville may look like a cause for alarm, but the truth is that this isn't the only city that experienced such a trend. Across Texas, many municipalities also watched their accident volumes increase, with national averages going up two years in a row to peak in 2016. Accident figures then began to creep downward across the US over the next two years. Lewisville's volume pattern may not match year-on-year with national averages, but it does begin with a sharp increase before showing signs of decline.

History of Fatalities in Lewisville

While accident rates in Lewisville might follow national patterns, fatality rates in the city most certainly don't. Across the country, the number of fatalities went up, and down, in concert with the number of overall accidents for each year, starting off low in 2014, rising through 2015 and 2016, and then beginning to ease off starting in 2017 and into the following year. Yet fatality rates in Lewisville remained relatively flat throughout the last five years.

In fact, from 2014 through 2017, the number of fatal crashes in Lewisville averaged between 4 and 5 annually. What's even more, three of the four years held steady at 5 fatalities, with only 2015 coming in at 4 annual deaths. Such a fluctuation is practically statistically insignificant, even among a population of around 106,000.  Even the blip on Lewisville's radar that was the anomaly of 2018's fatality rate, when there were 8 deaths, is still well below dangerous levels. Additionally, with a per capita accident rates of 12.5 fatalities per 100,000 people, Lewisville's fatalities are well below the national average.

Many cities larger than Lewisville have lower five-year accident volumes. Yet few of them have lower fatality rates. This demonstrates that even though the city's location brings lots of traffic through it, it's still a relatively safe place to drive when you take into account how its fatality rates are so very low.
