Am I qualified to request a crash report in Idaho?

Because crash reports contain almost exclusively personal information regarding the parties involved in a crash, they are usually not allowed to be requested by anybody other than those who were directly involved in the accident.

Obviously, you’re able to request your own crash report in Idaho, and so are the other people who were involved in the crash, but that’s about where the list of immediately qualified requestors stops.

If you aren’t a member directly involved with a crash but are still looking to obtain a crash report, it would be a good idea to get in contact with the Idaho State Police, a good way to do so is through their website, where you can find a large list of contact information for varying departments in the Idaho State Police.

How do I find my crash report in Idaho?

There are three ways that you can request a crash report in the state of Idaho. These methods are by phone, online, and in person. Of course, the easiest and by all means the quickest way to complete a request, as long as you have all of the relevant information, is online. However, there are still two other methods if you believe you might require assistance or would just prefer a different method than requesting your crash report online, with in-person and phone requests being your alternative.

Also, note that requesting a crash report in Idaho is not free and will require payment of around $9.00 to $20.00 or more depending on your location and the way that you request your crash report.

How to request a crash report online in Idaho

Requesting a crash report online is by far the quickest, easiest, and most straightforward way to get a hold of your crash report in Idaho. When requesting your crash report online, you’ll need to pay a minimum of $9.00 for a PDF file of your crash report, and be able to provide the following information:

  • Whether or not the Idaho State Police investigated the crash (if they didn’t investigate the crash, they may not have the report for it, and you might have to contact a different organization to obtain it)
  • The case number of your incident (this information is obtained from the law enforcement officer that reports to the scene of the incident)
  • Crash date
  • Crash location
  • Names of the driver(s) involved
  • Information about the vehicles involved
  • Your contact information
If you have all of this information together, go to the Idaho State Police website here, and select the district in which your crash took place. After selecting the appropriate district, you’ll be taken to a page where you’ll be prompted to input all of the relevant information regarding your incident into an online crash report request form. From here, you’ll be able to select the means by which you’d like to receive your report. Your options are by email, mail, and fax.

The Idaho State Police advises that reports usually will become available within about two weeks of the incident being documented.

How to request a crash report in person in Idaho

The crash report request process in person is very similar to the online request procedure with regards to the information you’ll need. First identify the district in which your crash took place, then locate the appropriate police department location to go to in order to request your crash report. Be sure to have with you at the time of your request at least:

  • The first and last names of all parties involved
  • The date of the crash
  • The case number for the crash
  • Photo ID
  • The information that would be outlined on an information exchange form
  • Appropriate payment
In addition to this information, you should find the phone number of the police department you’re planning on making your request at and calling them beforehand to make sure you have all of the necessary information and the appropriate payment before you leave.

How to request a crash report by phone in Idaho

If you’d prefer to request your crash report by phone, the first step to take is to identify the district in which your crash occurred and then find the contact information for the relevant police department location. After doing so, be sure to have on hand for your phone call information like:

  • The first and last names of all parties involved
  • The date of the crash
  • The case number for the crash
  • Preferably The information that would be outlined on an information exchange form
Note that not every police department or reporting organization in Idaho may offer over-the-phone crash report requests or reporting services, so be prepared to make an online or in-person request as a backup plan.
